KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has detected two BA.5 and one BA.2.12.1 cases today, both of which are Omicron sub-variants.
Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin in a tweet, said this was the first time these variant lineages were detected in the country.
"Both are categorised by @WHO (World Health Organisation) as VOC-LUM (variant of concern – lineages under monitoring) under the Omicron variant.
"So far, risk factors remain the same," he said.
BA.5 and BA.2.12.1 are reported to have a higher transmission rate.
Malaysia reported 1,518 new Covid-19 infections and six deaths, including three brought-in-dead cases on Wednesday.
